Hello San Diego!
Theater productions—traditional and avant-garde—have blossomed in San Diego. Current and opening shows include: The Night Witches by the North County Rep Theater School, In Every Generation by the San Diego Rep, In the Heights at the San Diego Musical Theatre, Mala (again, some of the shows will be in Spanish) at the Old Globe, and Mud Row at the Old Town Theatre. Hadestown opens at the Civic Theatre next Tuesday. Next Friday, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum commences at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater.
Next week, the San Diego International Fringe Festival will take off. All tickets are $10, and almost all the performances are being held either at the Balboa Park venues Centro Cultural de la Raza or the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, both of which are in Balboa Park. Offerings that have cross-cultural or international themes include:
Friday (today), the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will honor several local arts leaders at its Keepers of the Culture event at the Quartyard. There will be an African Liberation Day Community Forum & Celebration at the San Diego Justice Center. Los Coroneles Del Señor who specialize in Northern Mexico banda music will perform at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.
On Saturday and Sunday, there will be a South Asian Culture Show at Del Norte High School.
Saturday, the Familia Loteria 7th Anniversary Celebration at Border X will include live music, loteria, craft beer and food. The Laugh Factory is hosting a Night of Latin Comedy. Lebanese music star Ragheb Alama will be performing at Town and Country.
Monday, Hassidic rapper Nissim Black will perform for the Jewish Arts Festival.
Wednesday, the recent film Yesterday will be shown at the Coronado Library.
Next Thursday, at the Angelika Film Center, Fire Island, billed as a
"multicultural examination of queerness and romance" will be shown.
Next Friday to Sunday, San Diego's oldest ethnic religious celebration, Annual Festa do Espirito Santo will take place in Point Loma.
Next Friday, the second annual City Heights Street Food Fest will be an evening of live art, music, drinks, community, and diverse street food. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be a Carnatic Concert featuring vocalist Vani Ramamurthi accompanied by Anirudh Bharadwaj on flute and Raamkumar Balamurthi on Mridangam. Acclaimed Cuban-American jazz trumpeter, Arturo Sandova will perform at Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla.
Next Saturday, the annual Sam Hinton Folk Festival will take place in Poway. The ever-awesome Media Arts Center San Diego will present its annual iVIE Student Awards & Film Festival at the Reading Cinema in Town Center. Next Saturday, you can take a docent-led Mingei Museum Tour. The animated film Encanto will be showing atop the Manchester Hyatt. The House of Denmark will hold its annual Lawn Program. If you just can't get enough Abba tunes, you can watch Mamma Mia! Saturday evening at the Hyatt.
Next Sunday, the House of Mexico will hold its annual Lawn Program. And there will be an opening for the French Film Festival at The Lot La Jolla in which you can dine on French cuisine and watch the film Delicious. After the opening party, the remainder of the films will be screened online from June 6 to June 12. Here is a listing of the films that will be available.
